MLB umpire Ángel Hernández is retiring after an infamous career

Ángel Hernández, Major League Baseball’s most infamous umpire of the past decade or more, is retiring effective immediately, according to a person familiar with the situation. The 62-year-old, who made his debut in 1991, has not played a match since May 9.

“I have decided that I want to spend more time with my family,” Hernández said in a statement, calling refereeing his “childhood dream” and saying he “cherished the camaraderie with colleagues” but did not elaborate on the factors that brought him to step aside halfway through the season.
