Nationally, polling stations have opened and will close at 9pm tonight as South Africans vote in the most contentious election in thirty years of democracy.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has warned of disruptive protests as South Africans head to the polls.

“KZN and the Eastern Cape and other areas including Mpumalanga are a concern, there are things we need to look at again. We have more than 17,000 SAPSs, so we think we are sufficient and the response will be good. What we have instructed the police to do is uphold and enforce the law, not negotiate. Anyone who breaks the law – no matter who you are – we will have to be tough and enforce the law against that person.”

Two thousand 800 soldiers have been deployed in hotspots across the country to help police maintain law and order.
