BSU prof will help set up an education center in Ghana

MUNCIE, Ind. – Michael T. Ndemanu, associate professor of multicultural education and social foundations at Ball State University’s Teachers College, has received the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship presented by the Institute of International Education.

For the project supported by this fellowship, Ndemanu will spend two months in Ghana this summer, where he will work with faculty and students from the University of Cape Coast to establish a Center for Transformative Education.

The center’s goal is to advance educational practices and create new opportunities for community engagement and learning, according to a news release.

Ndemanu’s work at Ball State focuses on “transformative education, multicultural education and social foundations in education,” according to the press release.

Foundation announces grant winners

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Community Foundation has announced additional 2024 grant recipients.

Belle Brown, a senior at Delta High School, will receive the Sarah E. AdamsScholarship. Belle plans to study fashion industry with a minor in business administration at BallState University. Belle is the child of Kelly Stitt and Matthew Brown.

Sharon Edwards, a student at Ivy Tech Community College, has received the Hurley C. and Fredine (Wynn) Goodall Scholarship. Sharon is studying nursing.

Abigail Goller, a senior at Yorktown High School, has received the Robert and Wanda McKibben Scholarship. Abigail plans to study nursing at Indiana University. She is the daughter of Jay and Tamara Goller.

Carly Howard, a senior at Delta High School, will receive the Ashley BurgauerScholarship. Carly plans to study nursing with a minor in business administration at Indiana University. She is the daughter of Curt and Ashley Howard.

Abigail Lindburgh, a senior at Delta High School, has received the Gary W. AddisonScholarship and the Lathrop P. Johnson Scholarship. Abigail plans to study a foreign language, Spanish, at Ball State University. She is the daughter of Aaron and Erica Lindburgh.

Jonathan Loney, a senior at Yorktown High School, will receive the Jim LefflerMemorial Scholarship and the Yorktown Lions Club Scholarship. Jonathan plans to study pre-med at Wabash College. He is the son of Heather and Jeremy Loney.

Ella Mauck, a senior at Wes-Del High School, will receive the Jon HunterMemorial Scholarship. Ella plans to study pre-optometry with a minor in biology at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is the daughter of David and Gina Mauck.

Brenley Miller, a senior at Yorktown High School, has received the Rex A. Waldo IIScholarship. Brenley plans to study neuroscience at Indiana University. She is the daughter of Deborah Miller and Matthew Miller.

Andrea Sanchez, a student at Ball State University, has received the Braden R. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship. Andrea studies architecture with a minor in interior design. She is the daughter of Adriana Scarpatti and Carlos Sanchez.

Alana Trissel, a senior at Burris Laboratory School, has received the eKeeperSystems Unparalleled Excellence Scholarship. Alana plans to study biochemistry with a minor in Spanish at Indiana University. She is the child of Kristi Trissel and ShaneTrissel.

The Community Foundation announces scholarship recipients in the order in which students accept the awards.

Cornfed Roller Derby Hosts ‘Smackdown’

MUNCIE, Ind. – Cornfed Roller Derby will host the fourth annual Smalltown Smackdown roller derby tournament on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.

This two-day event starts at 8am on Saturday with seven matches on the first day and lasts until 9.30pm. Sunday’s five games will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at the conclusion of the championship game, which begins at 5 p.m.

Tickets are available online or at the door for $25 per person for a weekend pass, $17 for Saturday only or $15 for Sunday only. Children 10 years and under are free when purchasing an adult ticket (maximum two children per paying adult).
