Exclusive First Listen: Dot.’s ‘Everybody Dances To Techno’ Is Reimagined By Bulli Bainbridge As Part Of ‘Indie Reimagined’

Since last November, Mumbai’s Zain Calcuttawala, aka Bulli Bainbridge, had dedicated his Instagram space for three months to reimagining some of his favorite Indian indie music, including songs like Anoushka Maskey’s ‘September Embers’, Prateek Kuhad’s ‘Co2’ and Parekh & Singh’s ‘I Love You Baby, I Love You Doll’, as part of a series he called ‘Indie Remixed’. Two works as part of the series have been released more widely to date: a new version of Raghav Meattle’s ‘City Life’ and another of Shalmali Kholgade’s ‘Runnin”.

Zain now releases his remake of Aditi Saigal aka Dot.’s most popular song ‘Everybody Dances To Techno’, which the artists are sharing exclusively via Wild City, ahead of its wider release on May 31.

“I still can’t believe how long the effects of this song lasted,” says Aditi cheerfully. The singer-songwriter and actress (notably because she was part of the main cast of the 2023 Bollywood film ‘The Archies’) had uploaded a phone recording of her rehearsing ‘Everybody Dances To Techno’ in 2017 while she was still a student at the university. Since then, the same recording has been listened to more than a million times on the Internet, generated covers, fan videos, and also received a release via streaming services late last year as part of Dot.’s ‘Practice Rooms’.

Bulli Bainbridge’s remix adds a shine to the song that it hadn’t seen before. As well as amplifying the songs’ nostalgic undertones with a ’50s-style arrangement, albeit with a more modern twist, the remix brings in a full live orchestra, with Macedonia-based FAME’s Skopje Studio Orchestra bringing a cinematic lushness to adds string arrangement.

The orchestra also contributed to Bulli Bainbridge’s upcoming remixes of Anoushka Maskey’s ‘September Embers’ and Tejas’ ‘Ruby’, due out later this year.

“I truly believe that India has seen exceptional indie music in the last decade; whether it be in songwriting or production value and quality,” says Zain as he explains how ‘Indie Remixed’ has been a useful exercise in creativity and experimentation. how the inspiration for the series came from the thoughts the songs generated about what they would have sounded like if he had produced them. “It was great to pay tribute to the music I love in my own way and bring it back to the public in the best way possible.”

Bulli Bainbridge’s remix of ‘Everybody Dances To Techno’ by Dot. releases May 31 via Bohemia Junction. In the meantime, you can listen to it exclusively with us via the player above and visit the artist profiles of Bulli Bainbridge and Dot. learn more.
