Jessica Biel hopes to normalize the conversation around menstruation with a new children’s book

Jessica Biel is the author of a new children’s book aimed at destigmatizing and normalizing the conversation around menstruation.

“A Children’s Book About Menstruation” is “designed to inspire positive conversations between children and adults,” according to an official synopsis, and is inspired by Biel’s own personal experience when she got her period for the first time.

In an interview with Women’s Health published Wednesday, Biel said her mother told her she “absolutely prepared” her daughter for the milestone. But the ‘Sinner’ star went on to admit she couldn’t remember any such conversation, even saying she thought she was ‘dying’ when she got her period for the first time.

“We need to change the sentiment around the way we talk about this thing,” she said. She added that while people like her mother helped her prepare, she wasn’t open to listening “because of the cultural shame surrounding it.”

She wants to remove that ‘cultural shame’ that Biel experienced with ‘A children’s book about menstruation’, which she hopes will better inform today’s children.

“This book provides positive information about how menstruation works,” reads the book’s synopsis. “It helps to show kids ages 7 to 9 that periods are normal and that it’s actually kind of cool to have your period.”

Even her own two sons — Silas, 9, and Phineas, 3, whom she shares with Justin Timberlake — aren’t immune to learning about the subject in their home. The book is even dedicated to them.

Biel said she plans to read the book to her boys at some point, but in the meantime, “I think we’re creating a very calm and kind of normalized feeling around it.”

‘A Children’s Book About Menstruation’ is on Kindle and is now available in hardcover.
