With the start of summer just around the corner, visitors poured into the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theater on Saturday evening to kick off SCERA’s summer events and celebrate the first show this year in the outdoor theater. Although it had rained all day leading up to the show, fans braved the cold weather for an unforgettable evening of music and fun.

As the show started, it was announced that Al Jardine would not be able to attend that evening’s show due to illness. Instead, audiences would hear from Carnie and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Matt Jardine, son of Al Jardine. The band touring with them was made up of previous touring fill-ins from the original Beach Boys, so the whole evening felt like being at a Beach Boys family reunion. The band wasted no time as they started singing classic Beach Boys songs, as well as a few Wilson Philips songs. The audience ate up every second of every song and regularly stood up to dance and sing along. At the end of the evening, inflatable beach balls were thrown into the audience for everyone to play with.

My favorite songs of the night included “God Only Knows,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and “Little Deuce Coupe.” As someone who loves music and music history, a nice addition to the evening would be the moments between songs where Wendy Wilson would tell some of the stories behind the songs and little known facts about how they were written. All three radiated the joy they felt while performing and made every moment of the evening fun. At one point Wendy took out her phone and had the crowd record a message to send to Al since he couldn’t be there. Overall, the evening was enjoyable and memorable for all attendees.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theater, and the upcoming events are here to commemorate the fun and artistic talent the venue is known for. Throughout the summer there are numerous outdoor ’80s movies to enjoy and the 19th annual Dancing Under the Stars on August 23 and 24. Plus, the summer musical lineup has something for everyone: “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” takes place from June 7 to 22, then “Crazy For You” takes place from July 5 to 20, and finally “Fiddler on the Roof” takes place in August. 2-20. The remainder of the outdoor season will be sprinkled with concerts, the first of which is the “American Mosaic” with Jenny Oaks Baker and family on June 24, Collin Raye on July 22, Richard Marx on August 26, Lauren Allred on August 30. and Home Free to wrap up the outdoor season on September 2. Buy tickets now and don’t miss the exciting summer season that SCERA Shell has in store!
