Best Father’s Day 2024 gift ideas for the ‘car guy’ dads

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Do you have a father in your life who breathes cars? You know, you can’t get enough of it? There are many great ways to make Father’s Day special for the “car guy.”

Most such guys still like old-fashioned books. For example, Preston Lerner’s coffee table book “Ford GT” chronicles the story of Shelby and Ford taking on Ferrari in the 1960s. If Dad loved the movie ‘Ford vs Ferrari’, he can read more about the real story here. Retail price is $60 at Motorbooks/Quarto.

Some topics, like cars and racing history, just aren’t that fun on a phone or tablet.

“They want to see the book! They want to sit in their armchair, have a cigar and read the book,” said Tina Van Curren, owner of Autobooks-Aerobooks in Burbank.

Her shop is a local treasure trove of car books here in SoCal. If there’s ever been a book written about a car, motorcycle, or airplane, they have it on the shelves or they can get it. Gift vouchers are also available.

Or how about a high-performance experience for a Father’s Day gift? There’s probably no better place in the area to treat a dad than the Porsche Experience Center, just off the 405 in Carson.

“We have a variety of different experiences for all types of dads. The most important, of course, is the driving experience,” said Elizabeth Wallmark, senior manager of the sprawling facility.

These hands-on sensations range from $600 to more than $3,500, for a sitting time of 90 minutes to 4 hours. There’s even an off-road experience in a Cayenne or Macan SUV. Guys who come here often can’t wait to come back.

“When they come off the track, they’re just so excited. They’re constantly talking about all the things they learned on the track and how much fun they had,” Wallmark added.

There is also a gift shop and a gourmet restaurant called 917 (the name of a famous racing Porsche).

For bigger budgets – okay, MUCH bigger budgets – wouldn’t your favorite dad love a new Bentley? Specifically, the powerful and luxurious GT S V8, which starts at “only” $274,000. As the iconic phrase goes, “It’s such a choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend you buy one.” And yes, dad can look extra cool on Father’s Day and every day, wherever he goes.
