Terrorist organization endangers IND versus PAK T20 World Cup 2024 match; New York officials assure increased security

The Islamic State terrorist organization has issued an ominous threat against the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan to be held here next month and New York officials said on Wednesday they were increasing security.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she has “directed the New York State Police to implement increased security measures, including an increased law enforcement presence, advanced surveillance and thorough screening processes.”

Bruce Blakeman, the chief of Nassau County, bordering New York City, where the match will take place, said: “We’re making sure we’re on top of any situation that could arise. With that goal in mind, we have taken many precautions.”

“We take every threat seriously. The same procedures apply to every threat. We do not minimize threats. We are tracking down all our leads,” he added.

The Islamic State terrorist organization, known by its initials, IS, posted on a British chat site an image of the Eisenhower Park cricket stadium in Nassau County with drones flying over it and the date “06-09-2024,” the date of the India-Pakistan match.

A screenshot of the message aired on an NBC New York TV news report. The station reported that county leaders “say they have made a request to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to make Eisenhower Park a no-fly zone for drones.”

New York officials downplayed the ISIS post as not a “credible threat,” while at the same time claiming they were monitoring the situation, increasing security measures and mobilizing resources for any eventuality.

Governor Hochul said, “While there is no credible threat to public safety at this time, we continue to monitor the situation closely.”

“My administration has been working with federal law enforcement and Nassau County for months to ensure New Yorkers and visitors are safe,” she said.

Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder said that while there are “no credible threats to date,” his department “continues to monitor the situation and we are proactively deploying resources to maintain safety as you continue your daily activities.”

Even if ISIS has not organized an attack, the threat of lone wolf attacks – members or sympathizers launching attacks of their own – remains.

The World Cup cricket stadium, with a capacity of 30,000, was built specifically for the tournament and will share the matches in the US with the arena in Dallas. It starts on June 1 with a practice match between India and Bangladesh, which will be followed by the regular tournament matches starting on June 3, featuring India and Sri Lanka, and running until June 12 with a match between India and USA.

NBC New York said security preparations for the World Cup event were the largest Nassau County has undertaken and are being treated on par with presidential debates.

As part of the safety measures, it said: “Local hospitals are also being involved in case they are needed.”

The British newspaper Express first reported the threat, which it said also targeted sporting events in Europe. It said ISIS “supporters are encouraged to target major events,” including the Cricket World Cup.

“There were also extensive discussions in the forum about how the terror group should use drones loaded with explosives to kill civilians at major sporting events across Europe,” the Express said of the messages in a chat group on the British website Matrix.
